A private network is a network that is not accessible to external users. It is designed and operated for the exclusive use of a particular organization. If the network is a LAN, then the layout is like the LAN layout shown previously.
If the network is a Wide Area Network (WAN) then two or more LANS will be connected. The connection will be by either a leased line or by Internet connection protected by A VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.
While leased lines are quite expensive, costs are calculated via the distance between LANs. They are fully dedicated to the business needs. Leased lines can have any bandwidth up to Internet backbone speed depending of the businesses requirements and the range of provision of your Internet and telecoms provider.
VPNs can stretch around the world, for the price of two Internet connections. An encrypted secure connection is set up between the two LANs using VPN clients and servers. VPNs can also enable tele working into the private network from any location provided the user has a VPN client and Internet connection.
